Lyric Writing: 3 Exercises for Generating Endless Original (and excellent) Lyrics

Some lyrics arrive like lightning. Most don’t. Most begin as something much less impressive: a half-formed image, a title you’re not sure about, or a feeling you can’t quite put into words.

The problem is, many songwriters assume that if the lyric doesn’t flow, the idea must not be good enough, or that they should wait until they are “feeling it.”

They wait for a better idea. The right mood. Another burst of inspiration.

But strong lyrics aren’t usually discovered in one perfect moment. They come from knowing how to generate more material, recognise what’s worth pursuing, and shape an ordinary idea until it becomes specific, surprising and emotionally true.

That’s the part of lyric writing that often gets overlooked. We hear a lot about honesty and inspiration, but much less about the practical craft underneath them: imagery, metaphor, rhyme, phrasing, perspective, structure and emotional progression.

This collection of Lyric Writing tutorials is designed to give you 3 different lyric writing exercises that will not only give you practical lyric writing tools that you can use on any day (inspiration optional), but will also teach you fundamental insights about the mechanics of great lyrics and lyric writers.

Enjoy!
