The HTWS Songwriting Accelerator Program

Take your songwriting to the next level—fast.

Keppie and Benny have taught thousands of students and songwriters around the world at:

We’re combining our 20+ years experience as professional songwriters, with our 15+ years as professional educators to help you short-cut to the most helpful, relevant, and efficient path to writing your best songs.

When your passion for songwriting isn’t quite enough.

As songwriters, we know the value of our creative practice that we treasure, but it’s hard to keep it up, even when you love it.

Here’s what gets in the way:

  • It’s frustrating and isolating to work on something with no immediate pay-off. It can feel indulgent, or silly, or sometimes even shameful.
  • It’s hard to be consistent. To find the time, or make the time, to work on our work.
  • It’s a challenge to finish the songs we start. Inspiration often gets us going, but it’s not what’s needed to finish all those songs you start.
  • You don’t know if your work is any good. It’s hard to know what to do with songs you know could be better. It’s hard to know where to go to get feedback, from a trusted source, who will hold your heart gently and give you kind, specific, and actionable guidance.

When we are not doing our precious creative work, it is very rarely a lack of inspiration or talent. And we can’t blame lack of motivation either (you’re here because you want to do it!).

The truth is, we don’t write the songs we dream of because:

And the result? Letting more time pass before we commit to our creative life, which means you never share your message with the world, and are left wondering “what if?”

Sometimes a course on its own isn’t enough.

The Songwriting Accelerator isn’t just a “course”.

We’re here to give you:

  • Accountability – so that you actually write your songs, which means your work can be heard.
  • Deadlines – so that getting your work released doesn’t take years or decades, which means you can create and release more work.
  • Feedback – so that you can improve your songs, which means they’ll be the best they can be.
  • Community – so that you can be supported, encouraged, and inspired by a group of mentors and peers, which means you will stay motivated to write over the long-term.

We and our team want to support you in your creative life, to write songs you are proud of, have confidence in your songwriting going forward, with an actionable plan for how to record and release your music, so that your voice is heard.

What songwriters in our community have to say:

I find it hard to say how much my songwriting has improved since I joined…I feel like I’m able to get my songs about 80% of the way there, and the feedback from Keppie and Benny help to steer that last vital 20%, that I wouldn’t have been able to do on my own.

I didn’t feel at all confident about my songwriting when I came to you…I already feel more confident about getting my first set of originals across the finish line and recording them. It means the world to me.

Passionate communicators

How to write your best songs in as little as 6 weeks (around the rest of your life).

Here’s what’s involved in the 6-week program and beyond:

Each week’s 2-hour live Masterclass with Keppie and Benny is a high-level exploration of the week’s concepts. These live classes are highly interactive, loaded with actionable and repeatable processes, demonstrated with song examples, that become your tools for your creative life.

You’ll create a new body of work, by writing a new song each week. Each week has a specific songwriting project designed to put into practice the tools, techniques, and processes for the week. The curated projects are designed to hone your process, and give you the structure and accountability to move your creative goals forward.

Receive individual, personalized feedback by one of our expert team of songwriting mentors. They give you a methodical run-down of what’s working and why, and what can be implemented to make your song great. You’ll also get an audio recording of any suggested changes or alternatives.

In two 90-min workshops each week, songwriters from the group will have their songs reviewed with Keppie and Benny. Feedback is always kind, specific, and actionable—and feedback in the workshop is designed to illuminate the principles of great songwriting for everybody’s benefit.

Two 60-min facilitated accountability sessions each week will help you set goals, and carve out essential time to knuckle down and get to work! At the end of the sessions, we debrief and set our goals for the week. The two sessions are timed to cover all time zones.

In addition to the group workshops and personal song feedback, you also have exclusive access to work weekly 1-on-1 with Keppie and Benny on any songs of your choosing.

Beyond 6 weeks: you’re part of our ongoing songwriter community.

WEEK 2 OVERVIEW

This week, we’ll look at how to review your ideas and identify the potential within them. We’ll look at methods for filtering your ideas and a system of identifying which ones to work on.

We’ll cover:

  • Unconventional song forms — We’ll analyse of some iconic songs that did things a little differently, and use the power of analysis to create our own song form blueprints.
  • Understanding Song Form — Choosing which song forms serve as the most appropriate vehicle for your new song – creating a ‘song form blueprint’
  • The role of different song sections — We’ll explore what role each song section plays, how to arrange these sections in interesting and original ways and how contrast plays an important role in keeping your listeners interested. We’ll focus on the chorus and how to make it land with more impact and deliver your central message more meaningfully.

By the end of this week, you will have:

WEEK 3 OVERVIEW

This week, we’ll be tackling the ‘half-finished’ issue head-on and taking you through some very practical ways to get unstuck – we’ll help you create a system that allows you to repeatably move through creative blockages, and ultimately, finish your songs.

We’ll cover:

  • Strong melody writing — Practical steps you can take to make your melodies more interesting, more memorable, and more effective in delivering your lyrical message.

WEEK 4 OVERVIEW

Chords bring our songs to life – they provide the colours we paint with. In this week we’ll demonstrate the functions of chords and how to make deliberate choices when shaping your progressions. We’ll also look at how to create chord sequences that establish a particular ‘mood’ and support your lyrics and melody, how to break out of boring or predictable patterns, and how to create surprise and delight with unusual chord choices.

We’ll cover:

  • Chords inside the major key — You’ll learn 3 strategies for creating powerful song forms with simple chord choices
  • The character of chords in a key — We’ll look at chord ‘functions’, understand the relationships between chords, and use these relationships to start thinking about chord sequences as stories we can craft.
  • Chords outside the key — How to find and use chords outside a key to add colour, flavour, emotion, and surprise to your songs.

By the end of this week, you will:

  • Understand how simple chords can create powerful contrast and storytelling.
  • Know how to spotlight peak emotional moments of your song through chord substitutions, and hook iteration.
  • Completed Songwriting Project #4.
WEEK 5 OVERVIEW

In this week we’ll focus on what makes a captivating story – how to structure your lyrics in a way that maintains engagement, how to create delightful twists and turns through perspective and tense changes, and how to clearly and powerfully express the central message of your song.

We’ll cover:

  • Point of view and tense— How our choices of who is ‘speaking’ and ‘to whom’ (and when) are compositional choices that can alter emotion and bring a listener in even closer.
  • Using rhyme like a pro — Rhyme is a powerful way of guiding the listener through a song – but it can also create a certain mood, dictate how stable or unstable the form is and often be the difference between lyrics that sound cliche vs lyrics that sound fresh and surprising. We’ll look at how you can use interesting rhymes and rhyme schemes to engage your listener.
  • Power positions — How to use the psychology of attention to deliver your most important ideas with the most impact.
  • Rhetorical devices — Timeless and effective devices for elevating your lyrics shaping your narratives.

By the end of this week, you will:

  • Know and use 5 different rhyme types.
  • Complete a Rhyme Worksheet as tool to develop and structure your lyrical ideas.
  • Use Power Positions to write and rewrite a song to highlight your most important ideas.
  • Use point of view and tense as a deliberate compositional tool.
  • Completed Songwriting Project #5.
WEEK 6 OVERVIEW

Writing is really re-writing. This week, we’ll demonstrate how important it is to review and re-write elements of your song – how to strengthen specific lines and melodic phrases, how to substitute lyrical phrases at key moments, how to find interesting rhythmic and harmonic variations, and ultimately, how to make your song better.

We’ll also explore the various opportunities to collaborate, develop your songs, and release or distribute them through different types of projects and pathways.

By the end of this week, you will:

  • High-level feedback on your song.
  • A clear plan for completing your song.
  • A structure and method for finishing all your songs.
  • Access to industry-level professional songwriting briefs.
  • Practiced writing a song to a commercial brief.

Example of Weekly Schedule

The Masterclass and Song Feedback sessions are the Core Curriculum. All other sessions are drop-in. And remember: EVERY session is recorded, and the video replay is uploaded within a few hours to our learning platform – so you never need to worry if you can’t make any of the live sessions.

What I gained from the Accelerator: the transformation to having a routine that enables me to write songs, and better songs, regularly.

Who is the HTWS Songwriting Accelerator not for?

The HTWS Songwriting Accelerator probably isn’t a good fit for you if:

  • You’re not willing to put in the time and effort to commit to writing a song a week for at least 6 weeks.
  • You’re looking for the ‘secret’ magic bullet, or the ‘hit formula’, without putting in time and effort into building your craft. There’s no secret here. It’s just about putting in the work, and doing it consistently.
  • You’re primarily motivated by achieving wealth and fame through songwriting. Careers are built over the long term, with talent, craft, discipline, perseverance, luck, and kindness. This is not a ‘write a hit’ course. It’s a ‘write for life’ experience.
  • You’re looking for bespoke, done-for-you service, or professional co-writers who will take your ideas and turn them into finished songs. Our goal is to provide as much expertise, input, guidance and assistance as possible, but we can’t make or finish your songs for you.

It’s also not for:

  • Total beginners – if you’ve never written a whole song before, or would struggle to sit down today and write a draft of a song, there are other Workshops, courses, and offerings we run that will help you build that practice so that the Accelerator will be of great value to you in the future!
  • People still learning to play an instrument – you will be asked to write a song every week, so if you are still learning chord shapes on your instrument, or struggle to play through a song to a consistent tempo, you may find more value in the Accelerator once your confidence is higher on your instrument.

The HTWS Songwriting Accelerator is for you if you want:

01

Process

You don’t really need more ‘content’—you want to fast-track the process.

02

Support

You don’t want to go it alone—you want to be in the company of mentors and peers who match your level of motivation.

03

Guidance

You understand the value of expert guidance and mentorship, and are willing to invest in yourself.

04

Growth

You are done wondering “what if?”, done with wondering how to progress, done with wasting time.

You don’t have to be the best singer or player. You don’t have to have written 100 songs. You don’t have to be under 25. You don’t have to dedicate all your time to this (you have kids, a job, other responsibilities—we get it!). It doesn’t need to be a career (though it might be!).

You simply need to be someone who wants to make songwriting a more integrated part of your life, and have confidence in yourself to write regularly, consistently, and you want the support of expert mentors, and a community of like-minds to help you.

To make this experience exceptional and transformational, we are strictly limiting the number of participants.

  • The Accelerator Pass is limited to 25 people.
  • The Platinum Pass is limited to 10 places.

Are you ready to join us?

Let’s break down exactly what you get when you join the HTWS Songwriting Accelerator. There are two different ways you can join:

Our EPIC 100% satisfaction guarantee

We want the investment in this program to be an easy ‘yes!’ for you – if you’re prepared to do the work, we want to support you to write your best songs! We don’t want your money if you honestly feel this program is not for you.

If you’re not 100% satisfied after participating for 30 days, we’ll give you a full refund. Join us today and give yourself the gift of the program, but if it turns out that you don’t see value in it and you’ve taken 30 days to explore, then let me know and we’ll refund you in full (minus payment processing fees paid to external parties such as Stripe or PayPal).

Please remember that your progress is dependent on your willingness to do the work. With that in mind, refunds will only be issued if you have done the following: (a) completed 3 core weekly projects, and (b) submitted at least 3 songs for feedback.

If you’ve done those things, and for whatever reason aren’t 100% happy with your experience, drop us an email (within 30 days from the start of the program) and we’ll happily refund your entire payment (minus payment processing fees paid to external parties such as Stripe or PayPal).
